The Seating

Twelve strangers. One table. No devices.

The Seating is a private dinner series in Houston. Each evening brings together a small table of people who have never met, in a room you won’t know until the day of, for food, curiosity, and honest conversation.

Seats are given by application and careful pairing.

The shape of the night

No two dinners share a room or a guest list. What stays the same is how the evening unfolds.

The room
A loft, a bindery, an artist’s studio, a private home. The venue changes every time and is shared with the table two hours before the first pour.
The table
Ten to fourteen guests, usually twelve. Enough voices for a real conversation, few enough that nobody fades into the background.
Plus zero
Everyone arrives alone. No couples, no plus-ones, no familiar face to retreat to. It is the quickest way to stop being strangers.
The threshold
At the door, phones go into a locked pouch until the evening ends. Nothing is posted and nothing is checked. Your attention stays at the table.
Sealed courses
Each place setting holds envelopes closed with crimson wax. At every course the table breaks one together: first a question about where you come from, then a perspective worth arguing, and finally a question for the shared toast.
The Codex
The menu arrives sealed and is opened at the table. Every dish is set in advance with a guest chef.
The departure token
When your phone is returned, you receive one more sealed envelope: an invitation you may pass to one person you believe belongs at a future table.

How a seat is given

Nobody buys a seat outright. Each table is composed, person by person, so the conversation has range.

  1. Request consideration

A short application about what occupies your days, what you’re curious about, and how you show up in a room. Plan on ten minutes.

  2. A second read

If there’s a likely fit, the Curator confirms who you are from the profiles you shared, and may ask by email for someone who can speak for you. No calls, no meetings.

  3. Pairing

Tables are built for balance: instigators and listeners, storytellers and synthesizers, people from different corners of the city. A good fit is not a promise of a particular date.

  4. The summons

When a seat is set for you, you’ll receive an invitation with the date, the cost of the evening, and a personal pass-key. Joining the private cohort channel confirms your seat.

  5. The days before

A welcome note and a dietary check arrive three days out. The day before, a dress prompt: dark monochrome, perhaps, or velvet and linen.

  6. Two hours before

The address and door instructions arrive in the channel.

The channel stays quiet until after dinner. Only the host posts beforehand, so the first conversation happens at the table. Once phones are returned, it opens, and the table can trade numbers and plan what comes next.

The house covenants

Four agreements every guest makes before taking a seat.

Presence
Phones and recording devices are surrendered at the door and returned when the evening ends.
Solo arrival
Come alone. If there’s someone you’d love to bring, name them in your application instead.
Discretion
What is said at the table stays at the table. No one is photographed without their consent.
Generosity
Listen as well as you speak. Draw quieter people in. Disagree with ideas, never with anyone’s dignity.

Questions, answered

What does it cost?

The price of each dinner is listed in the invitation, before you confirm. Applying is free.

Who is it for?

Adults in the Houston area who are curious, generous in conversation, and interested in people unlike themselves. Titles matter less than what you bring to the table.

Is this a dating event?

No. It is a dinner among strangers. Guests are invited for what they add to the conversation.

Can I bring someone?

Every guest comes alone. You can name someone in your application, and each guest leaves with one invitation to pass on.

What about allergies and dietary needs?

Tell us in your application. Menus are set in advance with the chef, so we confirm what’s possible before you accept a seat.

What happens after my first dinner?

A first dinner is an introduction on both sides. Afterward, the Curator reviews each evening, and guests who added to the table are invited back.

What if I’m not placed at the next dinner?

Your application stays in consideration for future tables unless you ask us to remove it.

If this sounds like your kind of evening

Tell us how you think, what you’re curious about, and what you’d bring to a table of strangers.
